Dress Fabric, Which Should You Use?

Boasting over 300 different fabric types we will have a fabric ideal for your dress project. All of our dress fabrics are in a loom state making them ideal for dyeing and manipulating to ensure your project is made using the highest quality dress fabric.

Depending on the dress you are looking to make you will require fabric with different strengths, so here’s our guide on which fabric best suits which dress.

Silk Dress Fabric

Silk is a popular dress fabric, ideal for delicate dresses or those which you want to have a draped bottom. Silk is a lightweight dress fabric which has a slightly shimmered look which can be difficult to work with, but if you are an experienced dressmaker you can make fantastic dresses from our silk fabrics.

Silk Fabric Strengths

 

 

Wool Dress Fabric

Not the most common type of dress fabric, wool is used for thicker winter dresses to create a warmer outfit for the colder months. Wool commonly shrinks when it is washed and is quite rough on the skin which makes it a difficult fabric to make dresses from, but through perseverance you can create some high quality garments.

Cotton Dress Fabric

Cotton is the most common form of fabric which we stock, but these are normally used for dress prototypes or tulles. Our cotton fabric is strong, durable and inexpensive making it ideal for dress makers of all ability, cotton, like wool is usually combined with other fibres to make dresses of all types.

Linen Dress Fabric

With similar attributes to cotton, our linen comes in a natural state which is ideal for dyeing. Linen dress fabric is inexpensive and is ideal for summer garments, however due to its tendency to wrinkle we advise making sure any linen garments are placed on hanger rather than folded.
