Frequently Asked Questions About Hessian Fabric

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from our customers about Hessian Fabric. If your question isn't covered here, please contact us.

What is hessian made from?

Hessian is a coarse plain-weave fabric made from jute fibres, sometimes blended with hemp or sisal. Jute is grown mainly in Bangladesh and India. The natural golden-brown colour, rough texture, and visible weave are characteristic of hessian.

What's the difference between hessian, burlap, and jute?

Jute is the fibre. Hessian and burlap are both fabrics woven from jute. Hessian is the term used in the UK and Europe; burlap is the term used in North America. The fabric itself is essentially the same, the names are regional.

Can hessian be dyed or painted?

Yes, hessian takes natural and reactive dyes, although the natural brown of the jute tinges the final colour, particularly with paler shades. Acrylic and fabric paints work for craft and decorative use. A pre-wash helps remove any factory finish.

Is hessian a sustainable fabric?

Jute is a renewable, biodegradable fibre that grows quickly with low water and chemical input. Hessian is reusable and breaks down naturally at end of life. Sustainability does depend on processing and transport, so look for traceable sources.
