Chiffon Fabric

Chiffon Fabric is a lightweight sheer fabric. The name chiffon comes from the French word “rag” or “cloth.” Made from cotton, silk or synthetic fibres, chiffon fabric is an extremely fine mesh which gives chiffon fabric see-through properties. Chiffon is used for a wide variety of applications due to its flexibility and the fact it can be dyed in almost any colour. Most commonly used in dress wear as an overlay, which gives a floating appearance to the gown.

As well as dress wear chiffon fabric is used in blouses and lingerie, and its lightweight means it is easily bonded and therefore particular seems must be used to stop the chiffon fabric from fraying. Frequently Asked Questions About Chiffon Fabric

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from our customers about Chiffon Fabric. If your question isn't covered here, please contact us.

  • Chiffon is a lightweight, sheer plain-weave fabric with soft drape and a slight texture. It can be made from silk, polyester, nylon, or rayon. The slightly grainy surface comes from the high-twist yarns used in the weave.

  • Silk chiffon is softer, more breathable, and has a finer drape. Polyester chiffon is more affordable, more colourfast, and easier to handle, but feels slightly more synthetic. Both are used for similar styles, the choice usually comes down to budget.

  • The high-twist yarns make chiffon slippery and prone to shifting, and it frays easily at cut edges. A fine sharp needle, a walking foot, tissue paper underneath, and French seams all help. Test on scraps before working on the main fabric.

  • Standard chiffon does not stretch, the weave is closed enough to limit movement. Some modern chiffons are blended with a small percentage of elastane for fitted garments. If stretch matters, check the fibre content before ordering.
