Frequently Asked Questions About Coated Fabrics

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from our customers about Coated Fabrics. If your question isn't covered here, please contact us.

  • Coated fabric is a base cloth, often cotton, polyester, or nylon, finished with a layer of polymer or resin on one or both sides. The coating adds water resistance, wind resistance, or durability, while the base fabric provides strength.

  • The most common are polyurethane (PU), PVC, acrylic, and silicone. PU is flexible and used in outdoor wear and bag linings. PVC is heavier and more waterproof. Acrylic is used on awnings, and silicone gives a soft handle with high water repellence.

  • PU-coated means a polyurethane layer has been applied to the surface, making the fabric water-resistant or waterproof while keeping it relatively soft. The coating can wear over time at stress points such as seams and folds.

  • That depends on the coating. Standard PVC and heavy PU coatings block airflow. Some technical coatings, such as breathable PU and microporous laminates, allow water vapour to pass while keeping liquid water out. Check the specification rather than assuming.
