Frequently Asked Questions About Crepe De Chine Fabric
Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from our customers about Crepe De Chine Fabric. If your question isn't covered here, please contact us.
-
What is crepe de chine?
Crepe de chine is a lightweight, finely woven fabric with a slightly textured surface and soft drape. It’s traditionally made from silk, with the texture coming from highly twisted yarns in the weft. The name translates as “crepe of China”.
-
Is crepe de chine always made from silk?
Traditionally yes, but the term is now also used for polyester and viscose versions woven in the same style. Silk has the softest handle and most natural drape, while polyester and viscose alternatives are more affordable and easier to care for.
-
How does crepe de chine differ from regular crepe?
Crepe de chine is finer and lighter than most other crepes, with a more subtle texture. Heavier crepes have a more pronounced grainy surface and a stiffer handle. Crepe de chine drapes more fluidly.
-
Is crepe de chine sheer?
Lightweight crepe de chine can be slightly translucent depending on colour and weight, but it’s not as sheer as chiffon or georgette. Heavier weights give better coverage. Check the gsm if sheerness is a concern.
