Frequently Asked Questions About Elastane Fabric

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from our customers about Elastane Fabric. If your question isn't covered here, please contact us.

  • Elastane is a synthetic fibre with high stretch, capable of extending up to five times its length and recovering its shape. It’s rarely used on its own, instead it’s blended into other fibres in small percentages to add stretch and recovery.

  • Yes. Elastane is the term used in the UK and Europe; spandex is the generic term used in the US. Lycra is a brand name owned by The Lycra Company. All three describe the same fibre, the difference is regional or commercial.

  • A small percentage, typically 2 to 5 percent, gives the host fabric noticeable stretch and recovery without changing its overall handle. Higher percentages produce highly elastic fabrics used in activewear, swimwear, and shapewear.

  • Elastane is durable but degrades over time with chlorine, high heat, perspiration, and repeated stretching. Avoiding hot washes and tumble drying, and rinsing swimwear after use, helps extend the life of elastane-blend fabrics.
