Georgette Fabric
Georgette is a lightweight dull crepe fabric used for making evening wear including full-length dresses, blouses, and saris. The Georgette fabric gets its name from French dressmaker Georgette De La Plante who created dresses by twisting silk yarns to create a crinkly surface giving her dresses a unique look. Georgette isn’t the easiest fabric to use but it can make for some fantastic looking garments if used correctly. At Whaleys we stock 5 different georgette fabrics ranging in size and price.

Frequently Asked Questions About Georgette Fabric
Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from our customers about Georgette Fabric. If your question isn't covered here, please contact us.
-
What is georgette fabric?
Georgette is a lightweight, slightly sheer fabric with a crepe-like texture, traditionally made from silk and now also in polyester and viscose. The texture comes from highly twisted yarns alternating in S-twist and Z-twist directions, giving subtle bounce and soft drape.
-
What's the difference between chiffon and georgette?
Both are sheer crepe-style fabrics, but georgette is heavier, more opaque, and has a more pronounced texture. Chiffon is lighter, smoother, and more transparent. Georgette holds its shape slightly better, while chiffon drapes more fluidly.
-
Is georgette see-through?
Georgette is semi-sheer rather than fully transparent. Single layers show some skin tone or contrast, particularly in pale colours. Lining is common for garments where coverage matters. Heavier georgettes give better opacity than the lightest weights.
-
Is georgette suitable for warm weather?
Silk and viscose georgettes are breathable and have good drape, comfortable in warmer conditions. Polyester georgette is less breathable and can feel warmer in heat. The choice usually comes down to fibre content and weight.
