  • Interlining is an extra layer placed between the main fabric and its lining, used to add warmth, body, weight, or insulation. It’s most often used in curtains, tailored jackets, coats, and waistcoats. Common types include domette and bump.

  • Lining is the inner fabric that hides construction. Interfacing is a stiffer fabric used to reinforce specific areas such as collars and waistbands. Interlining is a soft, full-area layer added between main fabric and lining for warmth or body.

  • Yes, that’s one of its main purposes. Interlining adds insulation against heat loss, dampens sound, and gives curtains a fuller drape. It also helps protect the face fabric from sunlight damage by buffering it from the lining.

  • Light domette (around 130gsm) suits blouses and soft furnishings. Medium weights suit jackets and lighter curtains. Heavy bump (around 350gsm) suits full-length curtains and traditional tailoring. Choose based on the weight of your main fabric.
