Lawn Fabric

Another lightweight sheer fabric, lawn cloth is a plain weave textile made from high count yarns traditionally cotton but formerly made from linen. By using high thread count cotton the lawn fabric is silky to the touch, almost an un-textured feel. The lawn fabric gets its name from the clean crisp finish of the fabric which can be applied to a wide variety of fabrics. Lawn is commonly used in clothing manufacturing for garments like blouses, nightwear, lingerie and dresses.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lawn Fabric

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from our customers about Lawn Fabric. If your question isn't covered here, please contact us.

  • Lawn is a lightweight, finely woven plain-weave fabric, usually cotton. It has a smooth, slightly crisp handle and a translucent quality from the high thread count and fine yarns. The name is thought to come from Laon, a French town historically associated with linen lawn.

  • Cotton lawn is the general category. Tana lawn is a trade name owned by Liberty Fabrics for a specific high-quality cotton lawn with a particular construction and finishing. Tana lawn has a notably soft, silky handle and is associated with Liberty’s printed designs.

  • All three are lightweight plain-weave cottons. Lawn is slightly crisper, voile is softer with a more open feel, and batiste is the softest with a smoother handle. Lawn holds its shape best of the three; voile drapes most softly.

  • Lawn is semi-sheer rather than fully transparent. Single layers show some background contrast, particularly in pale colours. Lining or layering is common for garments where opacity matters. Higher thread counts give a slightly less sheer result.
