Lycra fabric which is also known as spandex or elastane in North America is a synthetic fibre known for its ability to stretch and still hold its shape. Lycra is exceptionally strong but less durable than natural latex which is the nearest competitor within the non-synthetic fabric market. Lycra is used in a variety of clothing items to ensure that they stretch when being worn. It is often used in sporting goods due to it being stretchy and lightweight. As well as sportswear it is used in jeans, orthopaedic braces and hosiery.
