Frequently Asked Questions About Metallic Fabric

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from our customers about Metallic Fabric. If your question isn't covered here, please contact us.

  • Metallic fabric uses yarns containing real or imitation metal threads woven or knitted with conventional fibres. Modern metallic yarns are usually a thin polyester film coated with metallic pigment or vapour-deposited aluminium, producing fabrics with shine, sparkle, or a metallic sheen.

  • Lurex is a brand name for a particular metallic yarn made from polyester film with a thin metallic layer. The name is sometimes used generically. Other metallic threads include real gold and silver thread, nylon-coated metallic yarns, and various proprietary blends.

  • Metallic fabrics can be slippery, prone to fraying, and the metallic component can be brittle. Use a fine sharp needle, sew slowly, and stabilise with tissue paper underneath if needed. Press with low heat and a pressing cloth. Test on scraps first.

  • The polyester film can crack, tarnish, or peel with friction, heat, and washing. Metallic fabrics generally need gentler care than non-metallic fabrics of the same fibre, and are more affected by hot ironing and harsh detergents.
