Frequently Asked Questions About Net Fabric
Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from our customers about Net Fabric. If your question isn't covered here, please contact us.
-
What is net fabric?
Net is a lightweight open-mesh fabric, made from yarn knotted, knitted, or woven into a regular grid of holes. The mesh size, yarn weight, and stiffness vary widely, from soft fine veiling to stiff bridal nets. Modern net is most often nylon or polyester.
-
What's the difference between net, tulle, and mesh?
All three are open-mesh fabrics. Tulle is fine and soft, often hexagonal in mesh shape, used in veils and tutus. Net is a broader category that includes stiffer, larger-mesh fabrics. Mesh covers technical and athletic open-weave fabrics, often knitted with stretch.
-
How is net fabric made?
Most modern net is knitted on warp-knit machines that produce the open mesh structure directly. Traditional bobbinet, used in fine bridal nets, is made on specialised machines that twist threads together. The mesh pattern and stiffness depend on the machinery and yarns used.
-
Does net fabric fray?
Knitted nets typically don’t fray at cut edges because the structure is interlooped rather than woven. Bobbinet and woven nets can unravel depending on construction. Cut edges on most fashion nets sit cleanly, which is why they’re often used as exposed trim.
