Polyester Fabric

Based in the UK, Whaley’s has a wide range of polyester fabrics suitable for use in many different projects. Polyester is often used in garment production thanks to its lightweight and fine nature. Using polyester to make up a high percentage of your garment will ensure that it keeps its shape and creasing to a minimum polyester is a manmade fibre and is commonly used in blends with other materials such as cottons, silks and viscose. Our polyester fabric range contains over 25 different varieties, all of which have different qualities.

Frequently Asked Questions About Polyester Fabric

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from our customers about Polyester Fabric. If your question isn't covered here, please contact us.

  • Polyester is a synthetic fabric made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a polymer derived from petroleum. The fibre is extruded as continuous filaments, then either used as smooth filament yarn or cut and spun into staple yarn. The result is strong, wrinkle-resistant, and quick-drying.

  • Polyester is generally stronger, more wrinkle-resistant, and less prone to shrinking than most natural fibres. It also dries faster and holds dye well. Trade-offs include lower breathability, a tendency to retain odours, and concerns over petrochemical sourcing and microplastic shedding.

  • Recycled polyester (rPET) is made from recycled plastic bottles or post-industrial waste, reducing the need for virgin petroleum and diverting plastic from landfill. It performs similarly to virgin polyester. Microplastic shedding remains a concern, but the lower-footprint raw fibre is a meaningful improvement.

  • Polyester is dyed using disperse dyes, which bond into the fibre under heat and pressure. Once set, the colour resists fading from washing and light exposure. This is one of the strengths of polyester for printed fabrics and outdoor applications.
