Rayon Fabric
Rayon fabric is a versatile textile made from regenerated cellulose fibres, often derived from wood pulp. Known for its silky texture and breathability, rayon is widely used in clothing, home textiles, and various industrial applications. It combines the comfort of natural fibres with the durability of synthetic ones, making it a popular choice for a range of products. Rayon fabrics can mimic the feel and texture of natural fibres like silk, wool, and cotton.
Frequently Asked Questions About Rayon Fabric
Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from our customers about Rayon Fabric. If your question isn't covered here, please contact us.
-
What is rayon fabric?
Rayon is a regenerated cellulose fibre, made by chemically processing wood pulp or other plant material into fibre. It was the first man-made fibre, developed in the late 19th century. Rayon has a soft handle, good drape, and a slight sheen.
-
What's the difference between rayon and viscose?
Viscose is a type of rayon, named after the manufacturing process. In the UK and Europe, “viscose” is the preferred term; in the US, “rayon” covers viscose and several related fibres. Other rayons include modal (stronger and finer) and lyocell.
-
Does rayon shrink?
Yes, particularly viscose rayon, which can lose 5 to 10 percent on the first wash. Pre-washing before cutting handles this. Modal and lyocell shrink less than viscose. Some rayons are treated to reduce shrinkage during finishing.
-
Is rayon a sustainable choice?
It depends on the type. Standard viscose has a chemical-intensive manufacturing process, often using carbon disulphide. Lyocell, made in a closed-loop system, has a much lower footprint. Look for FSC-certified pulp and Tencel-branded lyocell where sustainability matters.
