Satin also provides a glamorous solution to interior design looking great when used for cushions, curtains or bedding. Frequently Asked Questions About Satin Fabric
Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from our customers about Satin Fabric. If your question isn't covered here, please contact us.
-
What makes satin shiny?
The shine comes from the weave structure, not the fibre itself. In a satin weave, the warp threads float over several weft threads before interlacing, creating a smooth surface that reflects light. The more floats in the weave, the more pronounced the lustre. The effect is strongest in silk and synthetic satins; cotton satin has a softer, more subtle sheen.
-
What's the difference between satin and sateen?
Both use the same weave structure. Satin is warp-faced and typically made from filament fibres like silk, polyester, or nylon, giving a high-gloss finish. Sateen is weft-faced and made from cotton or similar staple fibres, resulting in a softer lustre. Sateen is more breathable and commonly used in bedding, while satin has a more dramatic shine and slippery handle and is used in women’s apparel including evening dresses, nightwear and lingerie.
-
Is satin difficult to sew?
Satin can be tricky to sew due to its slippery nature and tendency to fray. A sharp, fine needle, reduced presser foot pressure, and a walking foot all help. Pinning within seam allowances avoids marks on the fabric face. Placing tissue paper underneath can prevent slippage. It’s worth practising on scraps first, and handling the fabric gently throughout.
-
Why does satin snag easily?
The long floating threads on the surface of satin can catch on rough surfaces, jewellery, or fingernails. Once caught, they pull and create runs in the fabric. To reduce the risk, handle with care, avoid wearing jewellery when putting on satin garments, and store away from rough surfaces. If a snag does occur, use a needle to ease the thread through to the wrong side rather than cutting it.
-
Can satin be used for upholstery?
Satin’s look is appealing, but it’s not ideal for high-traffic upholstery as it snags, water spots, and shows wear relatively easily. It can work well for decorative cushions, occasional chairs, or headboards where durability is less of a concern. If you do use it for furniture, a heavier upholstery-grade satin with a protective finish is the more practical choice.
-
What is Duchess satin?
Duchess satin is a heavier, more structured satin with good body and lustre. It holds pleats, gathers and drapes well, while keeping its shape, making it a popular choice for bridal and formal wear. It’s less likely to cling than lighter satins and the extra weight makes it slightly easier to handle when sewing. See our S112 Satin Silk Heavy White, a crepe-backed satin in 100% silk, with the satin face on one side and a textured crepe finish on the reverse, adding versatility to your project. The CD74/CD74B 100% Cotton Satin Duchesse is available in White and Black.
-
Is satin suitable for summer clothing?
It depends on the fibre content. Silk satin is naturally breathable and temperature-regulating, so it can be comfortable in warm weather. Polyester and acetate satins are less breathable and can feel warm in the heat. For summer, lightweight silk or rayon satin works well in slip dresses, camisoles, or blouses. Heavier or fully synthetic satins are better kept for cooler months.
