  • Silk chiffon is a lightweight, sheer fabric woven from silk yarns with high twist, producing the slightly grainy texture and soft drape associated with chiffon. It’s one of the finest fabric weights, with a softer handle and better breathability than synthetic chiffon.

  • The most reliable check is the fibre content on the specification or label, ideally backed by certification. Genuine silk has a slight warmth to the touch and a softer, less plastic feel than polyester. A burn test on a small thread can confirm fibre type but is destructive.

  • Silk is labour-intensive to produce. Each cocoon yields a single long filament that must be unwound and processed, with low yields and delicate handling. Polyester chiffon is mass-produced from petrochemicals at much lower cost.
