Frequently Asked Questions About Stripe Fabric
Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from our customers about Stripe Fabric. If your question isn't covered here, please contact us.
-
What is ticking stripe fabric?
Ticking is a strong, tightly woven fabric, traditionally cotton or cotton-linen, with a narrow stripe pattern, usually in dark blue, black, or brown on a natural ground. It was originally developed to keep feathers and stuffing inside mattresses and pillows.
-
What's the difference between yarn-dyed and printed stripes?
Yarn-dyed stripes are made by weaving pre-dyed yarns into the fabric, so the stripes go right through and look the same on both sides. Printed stripes are applied to the surface, with the back showing a paler version. Yarn-dyed stripes wear better and don’t fade unevenly.
-
How do I match stripes when cutting?
Lay out pattern pieces so the stripes line up across visible seams. Mark stripe positions on each piece with chalk or tailor’s tacks, then match those marks when sewing. Allow extra fabric for matching, particularly for pieces that span the width.
-
Are stripes always woven, or can they be knitted?
Stripes appear in both. Yarn-dyed stripes in jersey and other knits are made by changing yarn colour during knitting, producing horizontal stripes. Woven stripes can run vertically (along the warp) or horizontally (across the weft) depending on which yarn is dyed.
