Frequently Asked Questions About Cotton Fabric

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions from our customers about Cotton Fabric. If your question isn't covered here, please contact us.

  • Cotton fibre is harvested from the cotton plant’s seed pod, cleaned, and combed into slivers. These are spun into yarn and woven or knitted into fabric. Combed cotton uses only the longest fibres for a smoother result; carded cotton includes shorter fibres for a softer, more textured handle.

  • Carded cotton is softer and slightly fuzzier, with shorter fibres mixed in. Combed cotton has the short fibres removed, leaving only the longest ones, so it’s smoother, stronger, and less prone to pilling. Combed cotton is more expensive.

  • Cotton is biodegradable and renewable, but conventional farming uses significant water and chemical inputs. Organic cotton has a lower footprint. Look for GOTS or OEKO-TEX certification if sustainability is a priority. Recycled cotton is another lower-impact option.

  • Lightweight cotton (around 80gsm) suits fine shirting and lining. Mid-weight (140 to 220gsm) is the most versatile, working for shirts, dresses, and lighter furnishings. Heavyweight (300gsm and above) is used for canvas and upholstery.
